MEDICAL POLICY

and

PROCEDURE

Being a collection of facts and comments from authenticated

sources concerning the state of medical care available

in the galaxy as of this point in time.

Preface

In order to maintain an efficient and effective unit that is ready and able to respond to any situation that may be encountered unexpectedly or otherwise, the health and fitness of each individual is of paramount importance. A handbook for individual guidance is of considerable assistance, if not a necessity, to all commissioned officers in the routine instruction or quick training of their commands in fundamental duties.

An effort has been made to place before the medical staff in a convenient, compact and economical form.. essential features which they must learn not only in order to perform well their present duties, but that, their comprehension of their duties as a medic will rest on a solid foundation. With this object in mind..... certain paragraphs and descriptions of authorized manuals and rules of the Star Wars Combine are presented with supplementary paragraphs added when thought necessary to aid the inexperienced.

Medical Policy

Each Medic shall be responsible for ensuring that the health of the individuals under their care is maintained at the highest level possible and that proper records are maintained showing their current health point status along with their maximum health point status. Any change in the health of these individuals, either positive or negative, shall be noted in the record along with a description of the cause of the change and any procedure performed to correct a negative change.

All medical officers will report their current health point status, current and maximum, to their commanding officer along with any change to their health point status and any procedure performed to correct a negative change. These reports will be added to the officer’s personnel record and forwarded to the Chief Medical Officer for his review.

All personnel are required to use only medical items supplied and approved by Ankh Biomedical Services to insure that counterfeit items do not adversely affect their health and the health and safety of the entire unit. Medical treatment items will be kept in a secure location and any loss will be promptly reported to your commanding officer.

Medical Procedures

Overview
Genuine medical items will let you restore your own, another player's or an NPC's Health Points. They can be produced by any medical faction and as the Force Guardians Faction is a medical faction we are a major supplier of these items. The following items are considered genuine medical items: Bacta Patch, Healing Stick, Medikit, Bacta Tank and Bacta Refill.

To use a medical item, the following conditions must be met:

You and the individual you are treating, the casualty, need to be at the same location and in the case of Bacta Tanks in the same medical room.

· You and the casualty must be in the same party.

· You and the casualty must not be part of another medical action.

· For Bacta Tanks and Medikits: You need enough Bacta Refills inside the entity for the procedure to be effective.

· For Bacta Tanks: The Tank must be deployed in a medical room and you and your casualty must be in the same medical room.

While being part of a medical action, neither you nor your casualty can move until the procedure has completed. The one exception is that after applying a Bacta Patch both you and your target can move. Additionally, when applying a medical item, your casualty is automatically removed from your party. Before being put into a Bacta Tank, the casualty automatically drops all equipped items.

- 2 –

To use a medical item on someone else, you have to apply it via the Item screen or, in case of the bacta tank, load the patient into the tank. After using a medical item, the following thing will happen to the medical item:

· Bacta Patch: the patch is destroyed

· Healing Stick: the stick is destroyed

· Medikit: the kit remains, 1 Bacta Refill inside is destroyed

· Bacta Tank: the tank remains, all 3 Bacta Refills inside are destroyed

A word of caution, smugglers factions may produce counterfeit medical items or drugs which look exactly like some medical items. These drugs are mainly made from Ryll and are cheaper to produce. However upon using them as medical items, they normally have negative after effects and wound rather than heal.

Description of Medical Items

Bacta Patch

A bacta patch is a poor substitute for a full tank session, but can be a welcome relief when used in the field. To use, the patch must first be twisted several times to break the interior seals and release the bacta. Then the backing must be removed to expose the adhesive. Once applied, the patch seals the wound and time releases bacta into the area. Bacta is absorbed through the skin of the patient, producing a topical healing effect.

Healing Stick

A complicated mixture of synthetic elements and restructured chemicals, these can recoup 5HP per dose, though the process can seriously harm a sentient's nervous system if more than two are taken within a 24-hour period.

Bacta Refill

Many medical items require bacta to function, and since bacta is a living organism it must be transported separately in Trismegistian containers until it is ready to be used.

- 4 –

MediKit

Medium sized pack containing various bacta applicators and other medical equipment. These can be applied to the body to heal for +7 HP per use, though each use requires a bacta refill. Kit will hold 24 Healing Sticks or 8 Stim Packs or 30 Bacta patches.

Bacta Tank

Bacta Tanks can only be deployed in medical rooms. For a bacta tank to be deployed, it must be inside a medical room and no other tanks can be deployed in the same room.

Empty Bacta Tank

Once deployed, the tank can be loaded with up to three Bacta Refills. Once a single refill is loaded, the tank cannot be undeployed, nor can the refill be taken out again. You cannot load more than three refills.

Once three refills have been loaded, you can apply the tank to a casualty (yourself, another player or an NPC in your party). At that time, the casualty will drop all items he's carrying and is loaded into the tank. He will be ejected once the healing process is completed.

Any player can add an unconscious player to their party, and a Bacta Tank can be used to heal them above 0 HP.

Bacta Tanks can be flushed, removing any previously loaded Bacta Refills (or Bacta Ryfills) in the process. This can only be done if no casualty is present in the tank.

Medical Treatment

Restoring your health points (HPs) or another individual’s HPs can be as simple as using your own medical treatment skills. The amount of HP that can be healed per hour is the same as your medical skill level. So if your medical skill level is 3 you can heal yourself or another individual at 3 HPs per hour without medical items. If you are attempting to heal another by this method, they must be in your party and you must remain in the same space that they occupy.

Also, your medical treatment skill level increases the healing ability of any medical treatment items you use per the following chart:

Of course, you cannot realistically heal a blaster burn or even a flesh wound during emergency conditions without using medical items and to use them with any success requires an understanding of the restrictions that apply to their use.

The equation that follows this statement determines which treatment item will be effective for your injury.

- 7 -

Healing Restriction equals the individual’s current Health Points divided by their maximum Health Points or:

HR = HP/maxHP.

For example, if your current HPs are 40 and your maxHPs are 50, a Bacta patch can be used for treatment as the Healing Restriction is 0.8. However, if your current HPs are 30, a Bacta Patch will have no effect as your HR is 0.6 which is less than the Patch restriction of 0.7 but is greater than the Healing Stick restriction of 0.5.

The following chart shows the Healing Restrictions for the various medical treatment items.

The amount of Health Points that will be restored during a medical treatment depends on the following formula: The Health Points restored equal a random healing range of Health Points from the afore-mentioned Healing Restriction Chart times your medical skill plus 1. The results are then rounded to the nearest numbers.

HP restored = round(rand(healingMin, healingMax) * (Medical Skill + 1))

If the healing is being done within a medical entity, the healing power of the medical items is increased by a factor or 1.3

Equations:

HP restored = round(rand(healingMin, healingMax) * (Medical Skill + 1)) * 1.3

For example: Your patient has suffered a loss of 23 Health Points from their Maximum of 98. (98-23=75, 75/98=0.765) Therefore the Healing restriction is 0.765. You decide that the treatment will be with a Bacta Patch. The healing range from the chart is 1 Health Point Minimum to 5 Health Points Maximum. Your Medical Skill is Level 3 and the treatment is being done in a medical entity, the base hospital.

HP restored = round(rand(1, 5) * (3 + 1)) * 1.3

HP restored = round (rand (4, 20)) * 1.3

HP restored = round (rand (5.2, 26))

HP restored = rand (5, 26)

Therefore, your patient will see an increase in Health Points from your treatment somewhere within the range of 5 to 26
As your patient is required to be returned to duty as soon as possible.

- 9 -

possible by his command, you decide that a more appropriate treatment would be by using a healing stick.

HP restored = round(rand(3, Cool * (3 + 1)) * 1.3

HP restored = round (rand (12, 32)) * 1.3

HP restored = round (rand (15.6, 41.6))

HP restored = rand (16, 42)

Therefore, your patient will see an increase in Health Points from your treatment somewhere within the range of 16 to 42 which gives him a much better chance of returning to duty quickly.

At this point in your training, you should have a good working knowledge of the medical treatment field as it exists at this time. Please take the time to read the Addendums that follow this section as that information may prove to be valuable to you in the future.

Also, as the field of medical treatment is constantly changing, please take the time to update your knowledge as further developments require the updating this manual and other important medical information sources.

Medical Items Currently In Development

Antidote

Often counter-acting the effects of poison, or otherwise neutralizing it, antidotes are considered a staple in most medical facilities. Taken in the form of an injection which goes through the blood stream of the patient, it prevents any further harm from the poison and allows the victim to regain their strength at a rate of 3HP per dose. (Not Implemented)

Laser Scalpel

The laser scalpel is a small, hand-held cutting tool used by doctors. It usually has the same thin, curved handle and short edge as bladed scalpels because of the efficiency of the ancient design. However, a few different versions may be found, depending on a doctor’s preference. A light durasteel casing is used to keep the laser from eroding the tool while still keeping production costs low.

Most operations are done by medical droids with specialized equipment, but the scalpel is still the most popular tool when doctors work with life-preserving cybernetics. Every doctor has one, if only to install cybernetic parts. The laser scalpel is still used for other operations as well, but as medical droids have become more efficient at everyday medicine the laser scalpel has fallen in popularity. (Not Implemented)

Stimpack

Stimpacks are used to heighten one's awareness and physical energy for a brief period. The needle is injected into the veins on the arm and the liquid spreads around the body increasing Vigor and Strength by +1 for 24 hours. However, due to the drowsiness-inducing chemicals used in its production, it causes +10 stun for up to 6 hours after the 'high' has worn off, and dosages are strictly controlled to a single Stim per day. (Not Implemented)

Medical Droids

2-1B: Like others of its class, this roughly humanoid-appearing medical droid has surgical manipulation appendages, a medical diagnostic computer and a treatment analysis computer. For detailed patient status information, 2-1B relies on medical instrumentation or useful analysis droids like the FX-7. The most useful characteristic of the 2-1B droids is the ease with which owners can update their programming and appendages. In addition to that, 2-1B droids can easily become experts in medical fields such as neurosurgery, podiatry, paediatrics, cybernetic limb replacement and alien biology. This makes the 2-1B a very sought after droid in markets across the Galaxy.

DD-13

Medical Assistant: A tripodal droid with a head capped with medical sensors the DD-13 oversaw the roughest medical procedures - originally produced as a prototype to fit aboard emergency medlifts, mobile hospitals complained that its slow speed hampered their ability to reach victims in need of critical care. Rather than update this design flaw, researchers instead simply remarketed the series as a stand-alone assistant for more domestic hospital use where it helped patients quickly recover.

FX-7:

The FX-7 medical assistant is a cylindrical droid with a number of retractable appendages which give it many advantages over medical staff with only two appendages. A large number of sensors help the droid to multitask easily without error, regardless of the alien species being treated. The FX-7 is well suited to monitoring vitals of multiple beings at a time, which makes it a great asset to battlefield wards, maternity wards, or any other high population medical care areas. The droid can often be seen aiding both live and droid doctors in operating rooms and triage centres. The combined sensors and appendages make the FX-7 ideal for this in many ways, as fewer medical staff are needed during procedures and patients in close proximity to one another can all be cared for by the droid simultaneously. Though the standard FX-7 lacks a droid language vocoder, this piece can easily be added to the droid via an expansion slot. Appendages and programming directives are also easy to alter, making this droid highly sought after in most medical fields.

MD Medical Specialist:

The 2-1B surgical droid might be the most advanced surgical droid on the market but the MD series is the most common droid. It was introduced decades ago, the original Emdees are still in widespread use, and new models and units are produced every day. The MD unit has the same design as the 2-1B droid.

Medical Ships and Vehicles

Medicae-class Nebulon-B Frigate:

The Medicae-class is a modified version of the standard Nebulon-B Frigate and serves many fleets as a hospital ship. The standard Nebulon-B Frigate is equipped with powerful sensors and deep-space multi-frequency antennas. These sensor and communication suites enable the ship to be used for scouting, command and control and search and rescue. The impressive versatility demonstrated by the frigate, along with a growing need for mobile hospitals within the fleets, lead to the eventual re-engineering of a Nebulon-B Frigate into the Medicae-class variation. As a variant of the Nebulon-B Frigate, the Medicae-class does not have the same hardware, weapons have been reduced to four heavy lasers, and sensor suite. The Medicae-class differs, however, with the inclusion of state-of-the-art medical facilities and more crew quarters to house the addition of a medical staff. Subsequently,a docking bay has been added and interior storage capacity reduced to make room for these changes. The first Medicae-class ships were made by refitting a standard Nebulon-B Frigate, but the popularity and usefulness of the Medicae-class quickly became apparent and they are now produced in this variation directly from the shipyard. The Medicae-class boasts four fully equipped medical rooms, which is more than any other capital ship. As a result of the modifications previously mentioned..it is now possible to dock and transport three Sprint-class Rescue ships within the hold of the ship....this offers ship to surface to ship transport for medical teams, security protection for the evacuation of casualties. Overall the Medicae-class Nebulon-B Frigate has proven itself to be yet another success in the line of Nebulon-B Frigates; it is also the largest hospital ship available and continues to hold a key position in any fleet. The ship has limited availability and is the envy of many a fleet commander. Besides providing the medical support required for a battle fleet, the ship can also be dispatched to provide aid and support for planets during times of crisis. Premier of all hospital ships, the Medicae-class is well equipped to perform its duties of mobile medical assistance.

Sprint-class rescue craft:

The Sprint-class rescue craft is an emergency medical spacecraft used to transport and treat wounded sentients. One of the most reliable ships in the market of ambulatory care, the Sprint is designed and operated to provide one of the most efficient levels of medical attention, outside of professional medical facilities. These "med runners" are commonly used throughout the galaxy to respond to starship distress calls and provide rapid medical care to those in need. The ship's flat, corrugated appearance is more functional than aesthetic; installed shields and hyperdrive enable it to often be the first on the scene and quickly transport the dead and wounded. Sophisticated sensors specialized in deep space survivor location add to the features of this first responder craft. Lives depend on the Sprint's crew and medical quality. Therefore, on-board facilities come with standard medical equipment for advanced life support and stabilization with little room for much else. The major producers of these vehicles are prepared to make customizations with transport reanimation and medical equipment on a case by case basis. The Sprint typically has a small crew of three and several medics staff the patient transport area suitable for accommodating up to four dozen causalities. Space is optimized solely for packing in the maximum casualties for medical treatment; prolonged flight on this ship would be cramped and uncomfortable for the able bodied.

Kettrifee Air Mover:

The difficulty of moving injured soldiers to safety during battle has long been a problem for army commanders. In order to alleviate the stresses already placed on normal troop transports, the Wookiees of Kashyyyk modified an existing vehicle and created the Kettrifee Air Mover (KAM) solely as a medical transport. The KAM, only sporting a single heavy blaster for defense, is swift compared to the bulky troop barges used by most armed forces in the galaxy. Its speed allows medical personnel to hop quickly in and out of battle in order to save as many lives as possible. The main vulnerability of the vehicle is the fact that it is entirely dependent on a single engine for propulsion; one well-placed blast can easily disable it. Another distinct characteristic of the KAM is the unique asymmetric design of the craft, a direct result of the peculiar aesthetics of the Wookiees.

Medical Facilities

The following entities contain one or more medical rooms:

Facilities: Palace (1), Hospital (6), Imperial Palace (2), Sith Temple (1), Jedi Praxeum (1), Royal Hapan Palace (1), Asylum (1), Conference Centre (1), Command Centre (1), Government House (1)

Ships: Super Star Destroyer (1), MC-80a (1), MC-80b (1), MC80 Home One Class Star Cruiser (1), Darkstar Battleship (1), Ithorian Herd Ship (1), Lucrehulk 3210 Battleship (1), Pulsar Battle Cruiser (1), Battle Dragon (1), Imperial Star Destroyer I (1), Sprint-class rescue craft (2), Medicae-class Nebulon-B Frigate (4)

Vehicles: Conquest-class Carrier (1), Kettrifee Air Mover (4)

Space Stations: Centrepoint Station (1), Medical Factory Station (1), Hospital Platform XQ-2

Hospitals

Medical companies throughout the galaxy know the importance of the hospital, and so do the inhabitants. Hospitals are there for the treatment of ailment or injury, with doctors, nurses, specialists and scientists all working together to promote the well being of all. The hospital is also at the front line of medical research, developing and perfecting the techniques today that will be needed tomorrow.

XQ1 Hospital Station

A secure space station designed for deep space usage and easy docking, the XQ1 station is not named a platform for nothing. Consisting of 3 landing platforms that double as docking ports there is little else except for a cramped command tower and large cargo space that has a small docking bay for a few defensive fighters. It is however a very useful station to own. It has powerful scanners that allow it to detect incoming craft before they reach the station and so functions well as an early warning post. It can dock with cruisers to transfer personnel on board them before battle and can defend itself against anything smaller than an escort carrier. It has a strong shield and can hold up to 300 personnel used to relieve patrol ship crews and maintain border integrity.

XQ2 Hospital Station

The Hospital Platform XQ-2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor: the Medical Factory Station. Advancements in technology and engineering produced the Platform XQ-1 which was not used for medical purposes but provided the foundation on which the Hospital Platform is constructed.

The engineering team chose the XQ-1 as a starting point of their design for several reasons. Chief among these was the speed at which large and small starships could dock with the station. A docking bay within the center of the station allowed for landing near, and quick access to, treatment facilities. The docking bay opened in three separate directions, each leading to one of the three pylons arranged around the center axis of the station. Larger ships were able to dock at the ends of each pylon and an air tunnel would be connected to the ship for the transfer of patients.

While the XQ-1 also has a considerable amount of space available, a choice was made to scrap the vehicle hanger bay and some weapons systems, including the tractor beam, to provide an area large enough to incorporate three fully-functional medical rooms in the XQ-2. There was some debate as to whether or not the tractor beam should have been removed, but it was noted that the docking capabilities of the XQ-2 would allow the station to field its own rescue craft in situations where a crew was either incapacitated or unable to dock with the station for needed medical assistance.

A strong sensor package will alert the hospital station to any danger, and it can also detect ships limping into the system seeking medical attention. Starships, such as Sprint-class Rescue Crafts, are then dispatched to provide emergency care and stabilization. A modest compliment of weapons including heavy lasers and turbolasers provides minimal protection, but are intended to purchase enough time to call for help.

No expense is spared in the construction of the Hospital Platform XQ-2 and it boasts some of the most advanced medical technologies available. A large database in the station's computer system provides medical information for a plethora of different races. Many doctors and medical technicians galaxy-wide seek positions on these stations as they are the premier centers for health care services in space.

Medical Factory Station

The medical factory station is a unique and important facility to every medical group in the galaxy. Unlike medical research stations or regular factories, these stations are designed for the sole purpose of creating the different medical necessities. With this purpose in mind, these stations were built with cleanliness, efficiency, and practical perfection at the top of the priorities list. If these were ignored when being designed, then producers would run the risk of producing contaminated materials and tools that would infect millions across the universe. As an example of just how important this is, the designers built many rooms to disinfect and clean not only the employees manning the machinery and working within the assembly lines, but the materials and parts as well. Keeping the tools sterile is important too and the station designers incorporated various methods of doing so as station features. With all these advancements and precautions taken, it gives the medical factions one less thing to worry about. In terms of defense, the station is pretty much an easy target. It has two concussion missiles launchers that would merely irritate most attackers instead of repel them. It maybe enough to scare away the random pirate attack, but definitely not a determined attacker. The designers suggest that a squad of well equipped and well trained fighters be close by, as well as a defensive fleet comprised of a few strong capital ships; otherwise this expensive and fragile station would be just another floating hunk of durasteel in the galaxy.

Medical Facilities ~ Production

Alahzi Farms

More commonly found in Jungles and forests, these fairly large structures are used to farm the Alazhi and prepare it to be transferred over to a Bacta refinement facility so that the medical Bacta can be distributed to the purchasers

Laboratory

A laboratory, is a facility maintained by medical companies throughout the galaxy. It is usually a building or group of buildings where several people work on production of medical items to ensure a healthier galaxy.

Bacta Refinery
Renowned for its state of the art laboratories and academic training courses, the Bacta Refinement Facility has been used for millennia to refine crude Alazhi and other additives into Bacta. A significant portion of the facility is devoted to large storage silos, allowing operators to stockpile several months worth of the final product. The Bacta Refinement Facility also offers an internship program to give scientists the necessary training to replicate the process at other facilities.
